Coronavirus & How to Stay Safe

Every day you are exposed to pathogen including bacteria, parasites, fungus and viruses. When this happens, the immune system works to create antibodies and immune cells to immobilise and destroy the infection. The next time you encounter the same infection, your immune system ‘remembers’ and mounts an attack.

The New Virus COVID-19

The thing to understand about the new coronavirus COVID-19 is that it stays airborne for hours and is highly contagious. Still, your body is designed to overcome any virus or infection, provided it has the right resources to support healthy cell function.

If your immune system has been compromised, for example through poor diet, dehydration, illness or surgery, your cells are depleted, and your body needs to work harder to fight off infection. There are plenty of things you can do to support your immune health.

How to Protect Yourself

Your first line of defense is to avoid contact with the virus altogether. In the case of coronavirus COVID-19, studies suggest it can remain airborne and in the air for hours. You can catch it by breathing it in or by touching a contaminated surface. Here’s how to avoid infection.

Wash your hands frequently with an alcohol-based hand sanitiser or wash them with soap and water. Make your own with alcohol and Aloe Vera.

Maintain social distancing of at least 1 metre (3 feet) between yourself and others to avoid breathing in airborne droplets which may contain the COVID-19 coronavirus.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth as your hands touch hundreds of surfaces throughout the day and can pick up viruses and contaminate your body.

Practice respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze and then disposing of the used tissue immediately.

Stay home if you feel unwell. Avoid crowds, especially in poorly ventilated spaces. Risk of exposure may increase in crowded and closed-in settings with little air circulation.

Seek medical care if you have fever, coughing and difficulty breathing. Follow the directions of your local health authority. Call in advance of arriving at the medical centre to minimise further contamination to yourself or others.

Clean and disinfect your home regularly, including routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces. COVID-19 remains active on surfaces hours after initial contamination.

Supervise Pets and Keep Them Indoors. While there is currently no evidence to suggest animals can catch or pass on COVID-19, the same preventative measures can also be used to safeguard your pets.
