An important announcement by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Health Care Providers 6 February 2019, confirms all breast implants, can cause Breast Implant Associated- Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).
Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a rare blood cancer of the immune system, a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which can spread throughout the whole body.
Based on medical device reports related to ALCL received by the FDA since 2010 at least 457 women in the U.S. have been diagnosed with breast implant-associated lymphoma, and nine of those women have died.
This recent development pertains to all breast implant types regardless of filling or texture. The FDA states, “We hope that this information prompts providers and patients to have important, informed conversations about breast implants and the risk of BIA-ALCL.”
