A growing number of women are choosing to have breast explant surgery to be ‘on-trend’, or so social media would have us believe. Like many explant women, I didn’t choose to explant to follow a trend. I loved my breast implants; I enjoyed the self-confidence they brought me. If I wasn’t so sick, I may never have woken up to the damage being done to my body, I might still have breast implants now.
Many of the women I work with in my breast implant program share the same story, health issues are by far the major factor when deciding to explant. Other reasons include change in lifestyle, change in priorities and change in body shape as we age.
Reasons Women Have Breast Explant Surgery:
Health: Women with the HLA B27 gene can experience health issues immediately after implant. Other women report autoimmune type symptoms within only a few years of implant surgery. Breast implants are not lifetime devices, the FDA recommend implants be replaced after 8 to 10 years.
Lifestyle: Breast implants are not native to the body and can feel bulky and restrictive, especially when doing physical activities and exercise. Change in lifestyle and change in priorities can prompt women to explant.
Silhouette: As we age our body shape changes and large breasts may no longer feel appropriate. Older women often opt to restore their breasts to a natural shape and size as their body shape changes.
Get the Right Help
A complete Capsulectomy or ‘en bloc’ surgery should always be performed during explant surgery. This procedure will remove the scar tissue or capsule that has become thickened and hardened around the breast implant. If these capsules are not removed there is a greater risk of postoperative complications and an increased likelihood you may never fully recover your health.
Regardless of your reason to opt for breast explant surgery it’s important to do your research. Understand the explant procedure and find an experienced breast explant surgeon. Being informed and having the right support team around you will give you the best chance when it comes to recovering your health.
